As workers begin to return to the office some companies are rethinking their office layouts, occupancy numbers, and even locations. The new way of working around minimal distance restrictions and partitioned workspaces will evolve. Power, plumbing, and network routes may need to be updated or completely redesigned. Office layouts that were initially designed to foster collaboration now appear as precarious breeding grounds for contagion. Office designs from a bygone era where closed offices with doors and tall cubicles for single work desk occupancy - which were looked down upon as isolation and divisional, now are being rethought just for the ability to create areas of productive serenity. Today we refer to these designs as safety barriers and mitigation management enhancemen...
The company has left the building

The company has left the building

What is a company? Is it a building, an office, a memo, a directive to point the way into the never-ending cost-cutting unknown? No, for a lot of the world the company is the people who do stuff that in some shape or form creates some value. It’s the people who move things, make things, fix things, maintain things, process things. The situation now has many of your companies (the people) no longer in the office or buildings, but working from home. In some cases, not even working, just not at work. For now, it is right in front of us, and some outcomes may not be too pleasant. It's one thing to be told that you can work from home, it's another thing to be told that you can't leave your home - of course, there are a few necessary traveling limitations which would allow some movement between sites providing essential services. Those who provide or support these essential services will be allowed to commute to their work locations - for now, provided they don'...

Heed the Plough Wind

Like the Plough Wind before a storm - the news and internet are buzzing with impending doom from the Corona Virus. The noise has gone up a few levels recently, but still, some companies may be waiting too long before pulling the trigger and asking their workers to work from home (if they can - some work doesn’t permit remote options). Of course, there could be some extreme mitigation ideas that could involve being stuck at work. Image the doors closing as giant padlocks and chains reinforce the stay in the office mandate.....ah, but that would never happen in the free world........right? Dedication versus incarceration, what an image that conjures up. If your area falls under a state of emergency you may be seeing difficulties already impacting everyday productivity....
